Picture someone cleaning out a late grandmother’s kitchen drawer. Beneath the rubber bands and expired coupons is her Bible, the spine taped twice and the margins crowded with pencil notes.

On the inside cover is a list of names she prayed for. The grandchild’s name is near the top, written years before they ever opened a Bible on their own.

That list is the kind of thing All Saints’ Day was made for.

Quick answer

All Saints' Day is a Christian feast on Nov. 1 that honors all saints, known and unknown. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday. Catholic, Episcopal and Methodist churches observe it, and many congregations read the names of members who died in the past year and thank God for the faithful who came before.

Key takeaways

All Saints' Day falls on Sunday, Nov. 1, in 2026.

Many United Methodist churches mark it on the first Sunday in November, which is Nov. 1 this year.

The feast's November date traces to a chapel Pope Gregory III dedicated in Rome.

In the New Testament, ordinary believers are called God's holy people.

Honor a living saint this week with a specific, written thank-you.

All Saints’ Day arrives this Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026. Because the feast lands on a Sunday this year, congregations that observe it on the date itself and those that keep “All Saints’ Sunday” on the first Sunday of November will be marking it together.

It is one of the oldest feasts on the Christian calendar, and one of the most personal. Beyond the famous names in stained glass, it invites every believer to remember the ordinary people who carried the faith to them.

When is All Saints’ Day in 2026, and who observes it?

All Saints’ Day is always Nov. 1. The Episcopal Church’s glossary describes it simply: it “commemorates all saints, known and unknown, on Nov. 1.” The church lists it as “one of the seven principal feasts of the church year, and one of four days recommended for baptisms.”

Roman Catholics, Episcopalians and United Methodists all keep the day in some form, along with many other traditions. In United Methodist congregations, a United Methodist resource page notes that the day is “celebrated on the first Sunday in November,” when “many congregations light candles, ring bells of remembrance, and call the names of those lost in the previous year.”

If your church reads names this Sunday, you may hear a few you know. That moment of silence after each name is the heart of the day.

Where did All Saints’ Day come from?

Its exact origins are hard to trace, but the outline is well documented. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon in Rome “to the Blessed Virgin and all the martyrs” around 609 or 610 and ordered an annual anniversary.

The November date came later. Pope Gregory III, who served from 731 to 741, dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s Basilica to all the saints and fixed its anniversary on Nov. 1. Pope Gregory IV, who served from 827 to 844, extended the Nov. 1 celebration “to the entire Church.”

A companion day follows. In Catholic practice, “the commemoration of all the faithful departed is celebrated by the Church on 2 November,” as the Catholic Encyclopedia’s entry on All Souls’ Day puts it.

The Protestant tradition kept the day, too. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, wrote about the day again and again over more than 30 years. In 1767 he called it “a festival I truly love,” according to United Methodist Communications, and in 1788 he wrote, “I always find this a comfortable day.”

For a wider look at how the church year moves from feast to feast, see our easy guide to Christian festivals.

Who counts as a saint?

Many people hear “saint” and picture a statue. The New Testament uses the word more broadly. When Paul opens his letter in Ephesians 1:1 (NIV), he writes “to God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus.” Other translations render that phrase as “the saints.” Paul was writing to ordinary believers: tradespeople, parents, servants and neighbors.

United Methodist teaching reflects that wide view. Its article on Wesley describes the “communion of saints” in the Apostles’ Creed as including believers who have died and those still living, from your own congregation to Christians around the world.

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV) pictures them as a crowd cheering from the stands: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Read the whole passage at Bible Gateway.

Being called holy is less about having arrived and more about belonging to God while he keeps shaping you. Our guide to the theology of sanctification explains that lifelong process.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

Who are the ordinary saints in your story?

Paul knew exactly where young Timothy’s faith came from. In 2 Timothy 1:5 (NIV) he writes, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

Lois and Eunice never appear in a list of famous church leaders. They show up in one sentence. Yet that sentence explains a whole ministry. We explored their legacy in the faith of Lois and Eunice.

Your list probably looks similar. A grandparent who prayed at every meal. A Sunday school teacher who remembered your birthday. A coach who prayed with the team. A neighbor who brought soup when no one else noticed. Most of them would be embarrassed to be called saints. That is usually a good sign.

How can you observe All Saints’ Day this year?

You don’t need a special liturgy to mark the day well. Here are five simple ways to start this Sunday:

Write down five names. List the people who shaped your faith, living or gone. Keep the list in your Bible.

Tell one story at dinner. Ask everyone at the table to share one person who showed them what following Jesus looks like.

Visit a grave or a photo. Spend a few quiet minutes giving thanks for a life that pointed you toward God.

Thank a living saint. Paul wrote in Philippians 1:3 (NIV), “I thank my God every time I remember you.” Send that sentence to someone this week, along with one specific memory.

Light a candle at church. If your congregation reads names or lights candles, bring the names on your list with you.

Photo: rawpixel / CC0, via rawpixel

Why does remembering the saints matter now?

Remembering is not nostalgia. Hebrews 12 links the cloud of witnesses directly to how believers run today. The people on your list are proof that faithfulness is possible in ordinary lives, through hard seasons and long years.

It also raises a quiet question: whose list will your name be on? Someone is watching how you pray, forgive and serve. Every family and every church is always raising its next generation of ordinary saints.

Back in that kitchen, the grandchild closes the drawer and keeps the Bible. This Sunday, it goes to church with them. When the names are read, they open the inside cover and add one more line under hers: their own child’s name, written in pencil, ready to be prayed for.

Share your story

Who handed the faith to you? A grandmother with a taped-up Bible, a teacher, a neighbor? Tell us about the ordinary saint in your story and how their faith still shows up in your family today.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day?

All Saints' Day on Nov. 1 honors all the saints in heaven, known and unknown. In Catholic tradition, All Souls' Day follows on Nov. 2 and is a day to pray for all the faithful departed. Some Protestant congregations remember the departed as part of their All Saints' observance instead.

Do Protestants celebrate All Saints' Day?

Yes. Episcopal and United Methodist churches, among others, observe All Saints' Day or All Saints' Sunday. Many United Methodist congregations celebrate it on the first Sunday in November by reading the names of members who died in the past year.

What is the communion of saints?

The phrase comes from the Apostles' Creed. Many traditions, including United Methodists, understand it as the fellowship of all believers in Christ, both those who have died and those still living. All Saints' Day celebrates that shared family of faith.

What does 'cloud of witnesses' mean in Hebrews 12:1?

Hebrews 12:1 follows a long list in Hebrews 11 of people who lived by faith, from Abel and Abraham to Moses and Rahab. The 'cloud of witnesses' refers to those faithful people, whose lives encourage believers to keep running their own race with perseverance.

What can families do on All Saints' Day?

Families can share stories about faithful relatives, look through old photos, visit a grave, or write thank-you notes to living mentors. Even a few minutes of remembering at dinner can help children see faith as something passed from person to person.

You know Sunday night at your house. The laundry is half folded on the couch. A permission slip is stuck to the counter with a coffee ring on it, and your phone lights up with a work message that says, “Quick question for tomorrow.”

You meant to rest this weekend. Instead, you ran errands, caught up on email and promised yourself next week would be different.

Here is the quiet question underneath it all: what if rest isn’t something you earn after the work is finished, but something you’re given before it is?

Quick answer

Sabbath for busy people means setting apart one regular block of time each week, ideally 24 hours, to stop working, worship and enjoy God's gifts. Start small: pick a day or half day, prepare the night before, put work and screens away, and fill the time with rest, people and prayer rather than errands.

Key takeaways

Sabbath begins with stopping, not with finishing your to-do list.

Jesus taught that the Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.

Prepare the day before so rest doesn't collapse into chores.

Shift workers and parents can still keep a Sabbath on another day or in shorter blocks.

Pair what you stop with what you enjoy: worship, meals, walks and unhurried time together.

What does Sabbath actually mean?

At its simplest, Sabbath means stopping. The pattern starts in the opening pages of Scripture. Genesis 2:2-3 (NIV) says that “on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.”

God did not rest because he was tired. He rested because the work was good and complete, and he invited his people into the same rhythm. The fourth commandment makes that invitation explicit in Exodus 20:8-10 (NIV): “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.”

The same commandment extends rest to sons and daughters, servants, animals and even the foreigner in town. Rest was never meant to be a privilege for the few. It was built into the life of the whole household.

When Moses repeats the commandment in Deuteronomy 5:15 (NIV), he gives a second reason: “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.” Sabbath is a weekly reminder that you are free. Slaves never get a day off. God’s people do.

Jewish families have kept that rhythm for thousands of years. My Jewish Learning describes Shabbat as running “from just before sundown each Friday through the completion of nightfall on Saturday,” about 25 hours, and as offering “freedom from the harsh demands of labor.”

Is the Sabbath a rule or a gift for Christians today?

Christians have answered that question in different ways, and many honest believers are still working it out. A Lifeway Research survey of 1,010 Protestant churchgoers, conducted in August 2017, found that 56% said a weekly day of Sabbath rest is a biblical command that still applies today. A quarter disagreed, and 19% were not sure.

Practice was more common than conviction. In the same survey, 77% of churchgoers said they take an intentional day of rest, and about 7 in 10 of them take it on Sunday. Among those who keep a Sabbath, 79% attend a worship service and 65% spend time with family. Only 33% avoid paid work, 25% avoid chores and 11% avoid shopping.

In other words, many churchgoers worship on their day of rest and then go right back to the grocery store, the inbox and the yard.

Jesus offers a helpful lens. When religious leaders criticized his disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath, he answered in Mark 2:27 (NIV): “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Sabbath is not a test you pass or fail. It is a gift designed for your good.

Why do busy people need rest so badly?

Because the alternative is wearing many people down. Gallup’s latest country data for the United States workplace found that 50% of employees experienced stress “a lot of the previous day.” The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics reports that 69.5% of adults got sufficient sleep in 2024, which means roughly three in ten did not.

Scripture saw this coming. Psalm 127:2 (NIV) says, “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”

A weekly Sabbath won’t fix every source of stress. It is not a substitute for medical care, and if exhaustion, anxiety or sleeplessness persist, talk with a doctor or licensed counselor. But a regular day of stopping gives your body, your mind and your relationships a recurring place to recover.

It also reorders your trust. When you stop for a day, the world keeps turning. The emails wait. The lawn grows. You learn, week by week, that you are not holding everything together.

If overwhelm already feels like your normal, our piece on breaking free from overwhelm is a good companion read.

How do you build a practical Sabbath rhythm?

You don’t need a perfect week to begin. You need a plan that fits the life you actually have. Here is a simple six-step rhythm.

1. Choose your window

Pick a regular 24-hour block. Many families choose Saturday evening to Sunday evening so the day includes worship. If a full day feels impossible right now, start with a protected half day and grow from there.

2. Prepare the day before

Most Sabbaths fail on the day before. Shop, do the laundry and make a simple meal ahead of time. If the house is a little messy when the window opens, let it be. A tidy house is not a requirement for rest.

3. Make a “stop” list

Write down what you will set aside: work email, paid work, errands, chores and online shopping. Keep it short and honest. The goal is to remove what keeps your mind in work mode.

4. Make a “delight” list

Stopping is only half of Sabbath. The other half is enjoying God’s gifts. Write down what refreshes you: a long walk, a nap, a board game, a slow breakfast, reading Scripture outdoors, calling a friend. Plan at least one delight into every Sabbath.

5. Put the phone in a drawer

Screens blur the line between work and rest faster than anything else. Turn off work notifications for the day, or keep the phone in a drawer except for calls. Tell your boss or clients ahead of time when you will be unreachable.

6. Open and close the day on purpose

Mark the beginning with something simple: a lit candle at dinner, a short prayer or a reading of Matthew 11:28 (NIV), “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Close the day the same way. Small rituals tell your body and your family that this time is different.

Worship belongs at the center of the rhythm, not at the edges. If you want to think more about why, our guide to the theology of worship lays out the foundations.

What if your job won’t let you take Sunday off?

Nurses, firefighters, retail workers, restaurant staff and pastors all work on Sundays. The principle of Sabbath is a weekly rhythm of stopping, and many Christians keep it on another day of the week when their schedule requires it.

Pastors offer a useful example. Sunday is their busiest workday, yet a 2025 Lifeway Research study found that 78% of evangelical and Black Protestant pastors unplug from ministry work for at least one day of rest each week. They simply move the day. That number has slipped from 85% in 2015, a reminder that even people who preach about rest have to fight for it.

Choose the day your schedule protects most often and guard it. If your shifts rotate, pick your Sabbath at the start of each schedule and put it on the calendar like an appointment.

Jesus modeled smaller pauses, too. When his disciples were so busy they could not eat, he told them in Mark 6:31 (NIV), “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” On a hard week, an hour of quiet can be a faithful start.

How can parents of young kids keep a Sabbath?

Honestly, rest looks different when someone still needs a diaper change at 2 p.m. Sabbath with small children is less about silence and more about pace.

Trade off: give each parent a protected two-hour block during the day.

Make Sabbath meals simple and the same each week, so no one has to plan.

Choose family delights: a park, a picnic on the living room floor, a long story at bedtime.

Skip the activities that turn rest into a schedule, like tournaments or shopping trips, when you can.

Children learn what a family values by what it protects. A weekly day that belongs to God and to each other teaches them more than a lecture ever could. For more on building those shared values, see the heart of family ethics.

How do you know your Sabbath is working?

You will not feel transformed after one week. The first few Sabbaths may feel restless, even guilty. That is normal when you are used to filling every hour.

Over a few months, watch for small signs. You notice you’re less irritable on Monday. Conversations at dinner last longer. You pray without rushing. You look forward to the day instead of feeling behind before it starts.

Give yourself grace when a week falls apart. A missed Sabbath is not a failure. It is an invitation to try again next week.

Think back to that Sunday night counter, with the permission slip and the glowing phone. Now picture it one month into a new rhythm. The slip was signed on Friday. The phone is in a drawer. There is a candle on the table, bread on a plate and someone you love sitting across from you. The work will still be there tomorrow. Tonight, you are free.

Frequently asked questions

What day is the Sabbath for Christians?

Most Christians observe a day of rest and worship on Sunday, the day of Jesus' resurrection, while Jewish families and some Christian traditions keep the seventh day, from Friday evening to Saturday evening. Lifeway Research found about 7 in 10 Protestant churchgoers who take a day of rest take it on Sunday. Many believers whose jobs require Sunday work choose another regular day.

What should you not do on the Sabbath?

Christians differ on specific rules. A practical approach is to set aside paid work, work email, errands and chores that keep your mind in work mode. Focus on worship, rest, relationships and simple enjoyment instead.

Is it a sin to work on the Sabbath?

Christian traditions answer this differently, and Jesus himself healed and helped people on the Sabbath. Many believers understand Sabbath as a gift and a weekly rhythm rather than a legal test. If your job requires Sunday work, many Christians keep a Sabbath on another day.

Can a Sabbath be shorter than 24 hours?

The biblical pattern is a full day, but many people start with a protected half day or evening and build toward a full day over time. A shorter, consistent rhythm is often more sustainable than an ambitious plan that falls apart.

How do I start a family Sabbath with kids?

Keep it simple and repeatable. Choose a regular start time, share a simple meal, light a candle or say a short prayer, and plan one activity the whole family enjoys. Consistency matters more than perfection.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. New research shows what pastors carry, and seven simple, specific ways a congregation can honor them before Oct. 31.

Picture the last car in a church parking lot on a Tuesday night. Inside, a pastor is finishing Sunday’s sermon notes after a hospital visit, a counseling call and a budget meeting that ran long.

On the corner of the desk sits a small envelope from a church member. It has been there since Sunday. The pastor hasn’t had the energy to open it, half-expecting another complaint about the thermostat.

What’s inside that envelope matters more than most congregations realize. This month is a good time to make sure it’s something worth opening.

Quick answer

Pastor Appreciation Month is observed each October, a tradition Focus on the Family named and began promoting in 1994. Churches use it to thank pastors and their families in tangible ways. The most meaningful gestures are specific: a handwritten note, protected rest, shared ministry tasks, prayer and care for the pastor's family.

Key takeaways

Pastor Appreciation Month runs through Oct. 31; Focus on the Family began promoting it in 1994.

Barna found 24% of senior pastors seriously considered leaving ministry in the past year.

Lifeway Research says 57% of pastors find their role frequently overwhelming.

Specific, personal thanks beats a generic gift card.

Appreciation lands best when it continues after October ends.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month, and there are still ten days left in it. The observance ends Oct. 31, which gives congregations, small groups and families one more stretch of Sundays to say thank you to the people who preach, visit, counsel and pray for them all year.

The timing this year carries extra weight. New research shows that fewer pastors are thinking about quitting than a few years ago, but many are still carrying more than one person should.

When is Pastor Appreciation Month, and where did it come from?

Pastor Appreciation Month falls every October. According to Focus on the Family Canada, the ministry “named and began emphasizing Pastor Appreciation Month in 1994.” It encouraged churches to honor pastoral staff and their families all year, while setting aside October for “a special tangible tribute.” For churches that wanted a single weekend, it suggested the second weekend of the month.

That weekend has passed for 2026. The rest of the month has not, and neither has the need.

How are pastors really doing in 2026?

The picture is better than it was, but it is not easy. In a report published Jan. 27, 2026, Barna Group found that 24% of U.S. senior Protestant pastors had seriously considered leaving full-time ministry within the past year. Barna called the trend “stabilization, not full recovery.”

That number is down sharply from the spring of 2022, when Barna reported 42%. Among pastors who had considered quitting then, 56% pointed to “the immense stress of the job” and 43% said, “I feel lonely and isolated.”

Lifeway Research adds detail. In its 2025 study of 1,516 evangelical and Black Protestant pastors, 57% said their role is frequently overwhelming. Another 67% said they feel they must be on call 24 hours a day, and 34% said they feel isolated as pastors. The good news: only about 1.2% of pastors leave the pulpit each year for reasons other than retirement or death.

So most pastors stay. The question for a congregation is whether they stay worn down or stay strengthened. Barna’s own conclusion points the way: pastors with stronger relational support are significantly less likely to consider leaving.

What are 7 meaningful ways to honor your pastor?

None of these require a committee or a big budget. They require attention.

1. Write a note that names something specific

“Thanks for all you do” is kind. “Your sermon on Psalm 23 got me through my father’s surgery” is unforgettable. Name a message, a visit, a phone call or a moment. Pastors rarely hear how their work landed.

2. Protect their day off

Two in three pastors in the Lifeway study feel they must always be available. Unless it is a true emergency, hold the email until Monday morning. Encourage your leadership to make the pastor’s day off a firm boundary, not a polite suggestion.

3. Take one task off their plate

“Pastors and their families genuinely need encouragement, people to share ministry tasks with,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research. Offer to run the setup crew, coordinate meals for a grieving family or lead the volunteer schedule. One reliable volunteer can return hours to a pastor’s week.

“When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.”

Exodus 17:12 (NIV)

4. Honor the whole family

Focus on the Family’s original vision included “pastoral families,” not just pastors. A spouse who shares a pastor with a whole congregation and children who grow up in the front row deserve thanks too. A babysitting night or a family restaurant gift can mean more than a plaque.

5. Ask about rest and sabbatical plans

Only 32% of pastors in the Lifeway study said their church has a plan for periodic sabbaticals. If you serve on a board or council, start that conversation. A planned season of rest is far better than an unplanned collapse.

6. Pray for them by name, and tell them

Ask your pastor how you can pray this week, then follow up. Isolation shrinks when someone knows what you’re carrying. For a deeper look at the trust that holds a church together, see our guide to ethics in ministry and accountability.

7. Give something tangible that fits

Paul wrote in Galatians 6:6 (NIV) that “the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.” That can be a meal, a book they mentioned, a weekend away paid for by the congregation, or a gift from your small group. Choose something that fits the person, not just the occasion.

What does the Bible say about honoring pastors?

Scripture is direct about this. In 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (NIV), Paul writes: “Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.”

Notice the last line. One of the kindest gifts a church can give its pastor is peace among its own members. Fewer conflicts to referee means more energy for the work of shepherding. Our explainer on the doctrine of the church explores why that shared life matters.

Photo: rawpixel / CC0, via rawpixel

What if October is almost over?

Then start anyway. Pick one item from the list above and do it before Oct. 31. Put a reminder on your calendar for February, when the holidays are over and encouragement is scarce. Appreciation that shows up in an ordinary month often means the most.

Serving a pastor well is also good for the one who serves. As we wrote in why serving others shapes us, giving tends to change the giver.

Back in that empty parking lot, the pastor finally opens the envelope. It isn’t about the thermostat. It’s three sentences about a hospital visit last spring, and how it changed a family’s worst week. The pastor reads it twice, sets it on top of the sermon notes and drives home a little lighter. You can be the one who writes that note this week.

Did a note, a meal or a quiet act of help ever carry your pastor through a hard season? Or are you a pastor who still keeps that one card in your desk? Tell us how faith and gratitude show up in your church family.

Frequently asked questions

What day is Pastor Appreciation Day?

Many churches observe Pastor Appreciation Day on the second Sunday of October. Focus on the Family, which began promoting Pastor Appreciation Month in 1994, suggested the second weekend of October for churches that preferred a single weekend. Any day in October, or any day of the year, works.

What is an appropriate gift for a pastor?

The best gifts are personal and specific. A handwritten note describing how their ministry helped you, a meal for their family, a book they mentioned, or a congregation-funded weekend of rest are all meaningful. Many churches pool gifts through a small group or the church office.

Should a church give its pastor money for Pastor Appreciation Month?

Some congregations collect a love offering or gift, and that can be a generous way to say thank you. Practices vary by church and denomination, so it is wise to coordinate through church leadership. A monetary gift should never replace fair ongoing compensation.

How can kids show appreciation to their pastor?

Children can draw pictures, write short thank-you notes, or help make a card for the whole family to sign. Pastors often keep these for years. It also teaches children early that the people who serve them deserve gratitude.

How common is pastor burnout?

It is common enough to take seriously. Lifeway Research's 2025 study found 57% of pastors say their role is frequently overwhelming, and when current pastors were asked why a former pastor left ministry, 22% named burnout, up from 10% a decade earlier.

How to pitch so you actually get featured

Editors at faith outlets read a lot of good stories, so make yours easy to say yes to.

Tell one moment, not your whole life. Guideposts-style editors want a single scene where something changed, with a clear before and after.

Lead with the lesson for the reader. Say in one sentence what a pastor, parent or founder will take from your story.

Keep the first email under 200 words. Put the pitch in the body, add a two-line bio and link to your church, book or music.

Show the fruit, honestly. Specific details (how many families served, what the business gave up, what changed in your team) carry more weight than adjectives.

Respect each outlet's rules. Christianity Today wants pitches only, Plough and Comment reject AI-drafted prose, and Guideposts does not take sermons.

Tie it to a date. A book launch, album release, church anniversary or ministry event gives editors a reason to run your story now.

Most servant leadership happens where no one is looking. Here's what John 13, Mark 10:45 and Robert Greenleaf teach about the quiet work.

Picture an office manager arriving at 7:15 on a Tuesday, a full hour before anyone else. She clears a paper jam in the copier, restocks the break room, and quietly fixes a scheduling mix-up that would have embarrassed a new hire in front of a client.

By 8:30 the office hums along. No one knows why the morning went so smoothly, and no one says thank you.

That same week, a promotion goes to a colleague who presents well in meetings. Driving home, she wonders whether any of the unseen work counts at all.

Quick answer

Servant leadership in daily life means putting other people's growth ahead of your own status, usually through small, unseen choices. It follows Jesus washing his disciples' feet (John 13) and his words in Mark 10:45 (NIV). Robert Greenleaf named it in 1970: the servant leader is "servant first," and success shows in whether those served grow.

Key takeaways

Robert Greenleaf coined "servant leadership" in his 1970 essay "The Servant as Leader."

Jesus washed his disciples' feet and told them to follow his example (John 13:14-15, NIV).

Matthew 6:4 (NIV) promises the Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Servant leadership shows up in small habits: unglamorous tasks, shared credit, real attention.

Greenleaf's test: do the people you serve grow healthier, wiser and freer?

What does servant leadership actually mean?

Servant leadership is a way of leading that starts with service instead of status. The servant leader asks first, “What do the people around me need to grow?” and only then, “How should I lead?”

That order matters. Robert K. Greenleaf, who coined the phrase, put it plainly: “The servant-leader is servant first.” In his words, it begins with “the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” Leadership comes later, as a conscious choice.

For people of faith, that idea is not new. It is the shape of the life Jesus modeled and asked his followers to copy. What servant leadership adds is a name for something many of us already recognize in the best bosses, coaches, pastors and parents we have known.

Where did the term “servant leadership” come from?

The phrase traces to a single essay. According to the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, Greenleaf was born in 1904 in Terre Haute, Indiana, graduated from Carleton College as a math major, and joined AT&T in 1926. He spent 38 years there, retired in 1964, and then began a second career as a writer, consultant and teacher.

In 1970 he published “The Servant as Leader,” the essay where the term first appeared. The Center notes that Greenleaf’s father was his original model of a servant leader.

The spark, Greenleaf wrote, came from Hermann Hesse’s novel Journey to the East. In the essay, he describes Leo, a servant who does the travelers’ menial chores but “sustains them with his spirit and his song.” When Leo disappears, the group falls apart. Years later the narrator learns that Leo was the head of the order that sponsored the trip all along.

Greenleaf’s reading was simple: Leo was leader the whole time, but he was servant first because that was who he was deep down.

What did Jesus teach about serving in John 13?

Long before Greenleaf, the clearest picture of servant leadership was a towel and a basin. John sets the scene just before the Passover festival, at the evening meal. Jesus knows his hour has come. He also knows, John tells us, who at the table will betray him.

Then he does something no one expects. In the NIV, John 13:4-5 reads: “so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”

Foot washing was humble, dirty work. Peter objects. Jesus washes his feet anyway, then sits back down and explains himself.

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” (John 13:14-15, NIV)

He closes with a promise that is easy to skim past: “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” (John 13:17, NIV). The blessing is attached to the doing, not the knowing.

Mark’s Gospel gives the principle behind the picture. When James and John ask for seats of honor, Jesus tells the group that the world’s rulers “lord it over” people, but “not so with you.” Mark 10:43-44 continues: “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” For a fuller look at how this teaching runs through the Gospels, see our guide to the ethics of Jesus.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45 (NIV)

Why does unseen service matter so much?

Service done for an audience slowly turns into performance. Jesus named that danger directly in the Sermon on the Mount.

In Matthew 6:3-4 (NIV) he says: “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Notice what that verse does not say. It does not say hidden service goes unrewarded. It says the reward comes from a different place. The Father “sees what is done in secret.” Nothing done in love is wasted, even when no human being notices it.

Paul applies the same idea to ordinary work. Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV) reads: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

That changes the question from “Did anyone see?” to “Who was I really serving?”

What does servant leadership look like at work?

Most servant leadership never makes a speech. It shows up in small, repeatable choices, often before or after the moments everyone else remembers. A few habits worth practicing:

Do the unglamorous task first. Refill the supply, fix the broken link, reset the room. Do it before someone has to ask.

Give credit in public, take blame in private. Name the colleague whose work made the project land. Own the miss yourself.

Ask one growth question a week. “What’s one thing that would make your job easier?” Then follow through on the answer.

Protect people’s time. End meetings early when you can. Send the clear agenda. Answer the question that is holding someone up.

Notice the least visible person in the building. Greenleaf’s test included the effect of leadership on “the least privileged.” Learn the custodian’s name and use it.

None of these require a title. That is the point. Greenleaf’s Leo held the highest position in the order, but the travelers knew him by his chores.

What does servant leadership look like at home?

Home is where unseen service is most constant and least applauded. No one hands out awards for packing lunches, folding laundry at 11 p.m., or sitting up with a sick child.

Yet the home may be the truest test of Greenleaf’s question about whether the people we serve grow. A parent who serves well is not doing everything for a child. They are helping that child become, in Greenleaf’s words, “more likely themselves to become servants.” We explore those everyday values more in The Heart of Family Ethics.

Some simple practices for the home:

Take the chore your spouse dreads, without announcing it.

Let kids see you serve a neighbor, then invite them to help next time.

Put the phone down when someone is talking to you. Attention is a form of service.

Pray by name for each person in your household, especially on the hard days.

Serving others is not the same as having no limits. If you are running on empty, rest is not selfish. It is how you keep serving. If exhaustion or resentment lingers, talk with a pastor, counselor or another trusted professional.

Photo: libraryofcongress / CC0, via rawpixel

How do you keep serving when no one notices?

Unseen service gets tiring. The honest answer is that it will not always feel rewarding in the moment. Scripture expects that. Galatians 6:9 (NIV) says: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Greenleaf offered a practical yardstick for the long haul. His “best test,” from the essay, asks: “do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?”

That test moves the scoreboard. Success is not measured by who noticed you. It is measured by whether the people around you are better off. We have written before about why serving others may be one of the most powerful things you do for yourself, and this is part of why: the quiet work forms you, too.

Three questions can help at the end of a long week:

Who did I serve this week that could not repay me?

Did anyone grow because of something I did, even slightly?

Where did I want credit, and can I let that go?

Go back to the office manager driving home after the promotion went to someone else. Nothing about her week was wasted. The client meeting went well because of her. The new hire kept their dignity because of her. And the One who “sees what is done in secret” saw every paper jam she cleared. She does not have to choose between ambition and service. She can keep showing up at 7:15, towel in hand, trusting that the reward is real even when the applause never comes.

Share your story

Somewhere right now, someone is clearing the paper jam no one will ever thank them for. Maybe that someone is you. Tell us how faith shows up in the quiet work of your job or your home, and your story could encourage another reader to keep serving.

What are the main traits of a servant leader?

A servant leader listens closely, puts other people's growth ahead of personal status, shares credit and takes responsibility for mistakes. Robert Greenleaf described the servant leader as "servant first," someone whose desire to serve comes before any desire to lead.

Is servant leadership a biblical idea?

The term comes from Robert Greenleaf's 1970 essay, but the idea is deeply biblical. Jesus taught that whoever wants to be great must be a servant (Mark 10:43, NIV) and modeled it by washing his disciples' feet in John 13.

Why did Jesus wash the disciples' feet?

John 13 presents it as an example to follow. After washing their feet, Jesus said, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you" (John 13:15, NIV). It showed that greatness in his kingdom looks like humble service.

Can servant leaders still be ambitious?

Yes. Greenleaf wrote that the servant-first person makes a conscious choice to aspire to lead. Ambition becomes healthy when the goal is to serve people better rather than to gain status or control.

How can I practice servant leadership without a leadership title?

Start with small, consistent acts: do unglamorous tasks before being asked, give others credit, ask coworkers what would help them, and pay attention to people who are easy to overlook. Influence grows from that kind of trust, title or not.

What does the Bible say about serving in secret?

In Matthew 6:3-4 (NIV), Jesus says to give in secret, and then "your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Colossians 3:23-24 adds that ordinary work done wholeheartedly is ultimately service to the Lord.

The platform brings mothers together with mentors and peers for honest conversation, free of the hidden sales pitch that comes along with most influencer content

Montgomery, Texas, (Oct. 6, 2026) — Mama Bears Rising, a free online community for mothers all over the world, recently launched by founder, Jessica Brassington. The platform is built around the areas mothers regularly weigh in on: family, education, wellness, faith, child safety, and civic life. Members get access to vetted mentors, live calls, guest experts, and curated resources across all of them. Members describe it as non-toxic social media, and that’s by design.

Brassington built the community after listening to the same worry from mothers again and again: too much information, not enough of it is trustworthy, and little patience for being told what to think. Mama Bears Rising is her answer, a space where moms talk to each other and to mentors who’ve already been through it.

“I didn’t want to build another place where moms get handed an opinion and are told to adopt it.” Brassington said. “Most of us already know more than we give ourselves credit for. We just need somewhere to think out loud without being judged. That’s the whole idea: give moms real information and trust them in the process.”

Brassington shows up in the community as a coach and guide, alongside the mentors. As a girl mom and Gigi, she’s not just leading this from the outside, but also sitting with the same questions. Moms show up, share what’s on their minds and walk away with the guidance and answers they need.

Mama Bears Rising focuses on the policies and topics that actually touch a mother’s heart with no political labels required.

Mama Bears Rising is open now, free to join, at https://community.mamabearsrising.com/join-mbr

Arriving October 6, the Broadway star, longtime entertainer and entrepreneur offers professionals a practical framework for building real-world confidence

FURLONG, Pa., Oct. 5, 2026 — Justin Guarini, keynote speaker, confidence coach and seven-time Broadway leading man, releases “Center Stage Confidence: How to Own Your Story and Command Any Room” on October 6. Published by Entrepreneur Press and distributed by Simon & Schuster, the book is for professionals who go silent in meetings, lose their words in front of an audience, or hold themselves back from opportunities they have already earned, helping them build the confidence to own their story, step forward and command the rooms that matter most.

Guarini first reached a national audience in 2002 as runner-up to Kelly Clarkson on the first season of “American Idol,” which returns for its 25th season in 2027. Nearly 30 million viewers watched the finale. Since then, Guarini has built a career spanning music, television, Broadway and business, including seven Broadway productions, a seven-year run as Lil’ Sweet in Diet Dr Pepper’s national advertising campaign, and voice work as Cat Burglar on Disney Junior’s “SuperKitties.” He has also hosted red carpets for the Grammys, Emmys and Tonys and worked with entrepreneurs and executives as a speaker and coach.

“Center Stage Confidence” turns more than two decades of performing, leading and building businesses under pressure into a practical system readers can apply in their own lives and careers. Far from a celebrity memoir or motivational book, it combines Guarini’s experiences with real-world exercises designed to help readers practice confidence where it matters most; from boardrooms and sales calls to difficult conversations, presentations and high-stakes opportunities.

The book also features conversations with Michael Bublé, Jordan Fisher, Amber Ruffin, Chalene Johnson, Kim Walsh Phillips and Russell Brunson, exploring how their habits, failures and defining moments helped them thrive under pressure.

“Real confidence is not about always feeling ready,” said Guarini. “It’s about trusting yourself enough to show up in the moments that matter, especially when your stomach is doing backflips.”

Readers learn how to:

Turn pressure into presence through practical, real-world exercises they can immediately put to use.

Build confidence through action instead of waiting until they feel ready.

Find mentors and allies while developing a more authentic and powerful presence.

Use facial expressions, vocal tone and body language to communicate with greater impact.

Guarini will mark launch day with the Center Stage Authority Bootcamp, a free, full-day event held in Atlanta and livestreamed online.

“Center Stage Confidence” is available for pre-order at centerstageconfidence.com. Readers who purchase the book and redeem their pre-order receive more than $2,000 in exclusive bonuses designed to help them put the principles of the book into action immediately. The Center Stage Confidence Bonus Pack includes a ticket to the Center Stage Book Launch Livecast, the Center Stage Confidence Workbook, the Core Four Planner, storytelling framework templates and a bonus video series.

Bulk copies for companies and conferences are also available.

For keynote and speaking inquiries, visit justinguarini.com.

###

About Justin Guarini
Justin Guarini is a keynote speaker, confidence coach, author and seven-time Broadway leading man who helps founders, executives and teams turn hard-earned expertise into visible authority. His signature keynote, “The Confidence to Fail,” teaches audiences to treat rejection, mistakes and endings as rehearsal rather than identity, a message he expands on in his new book, “Center Stage Confidence: How to Own Your Story and Command Any Room.” Guarini first became known to millions as runner-up on the inaugural season of “American Idol.” His career since has spanned Broadway, television, voice acting, entrepreneurship and national advertising, including seven Broadway productions, his seven-year run as Lil’ Sweet for Diet Dr. Pepper and his recurring role as Cat Burglar on Disney Junior’s “SuperKitties.” He has also hosted Grammy, Emmy and Tony red carpets, along with national television and corporate events. The creator behind the YouTube channel @sisterfaithh has made the opposite bet. Her videos ask more of the people watching them, and the people watching keep coming back for more.

On January 1, 2026, her channel had about 6,400 subscribers. This week it has about 38,000, and its lifetime views have passed 3.3 million. More than a million of those views came in September alone. She posts one long video every Thursday, plus Shorts during the week, and her dog, Bella, often shows up at the end. She works a full-time job. By her own account, she has been sharing on YouTube for less than a year.

That growth alone would be worth noting. What makes her worth watching is why people are showing up.

She starts with the gospel, not the algorithm

Her most-watched video is also one of her shortest: “How I Share the Gospel in 3 Minutes.” It has more than 274,000 views and 21,000 likes. There is no trend and no guest, and she does not bother with a hook. She lays out the message in four parts (God, man, Christ, and our response), cites Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23, and closes by inviting the viewer to repent and believe.

The comments tell you what landed. One viewer who says they have preached for 41 years wrote that they saw no problem with how she presented it. Another said that after many years as a Christian, it is hard to make the message this simple. That is the gap she fills. She explains the center of the faith clearly enough that other people can repeat it.

She also makes a point in that video that frames the rest of the channel. The gospel, she says, is not only for reaching people who don’t believe. Believers should be preaching it to themselves every day.

Her conviction has a cost, and she pays it

The recent videos that pushed the channel into a new tier are not gentle. “Christian Artists I No Longer Listen To” has passed 225,000 views in under two weeks and drawn more than 1,300 comments. In it she names Lecrae, Lauren Daigle, Brandon Lake, and the worship output of Hillsong, Bethel, Elevation, Maverick City Music, and Passion, and uses scripture to explain why she stopped listening.

You do not have to agree with every name on her list to see what she is doing. She is not ranking artists by taste. She is asking whether what a church sings matches what the Bible says about God. She is also asking whether worship is about God’s worth or about what the worshipper gets out of it. Her answer is hard to shake: we don’t worship because worship gives us something, “but we worship because he is God.”

What keeps this from being a takedown channel is how she ends. She tells her audience not to take her word as settled fact, and to take what she said back to scripture and check it. She admits she once loved some of the same music. She calls letting it go a part of growing up, not a debate she won. That humility matters. A critic who says “check me against the Bible” is a very different voice from one who says “trust me.”

The same pattern runs through her catalog: “Stop Turning Christianity Into an Aesthetic,” “TikTok Theology Is Leading People to Hell,” “We Have a Masculinity Problem in the Church,” “Many ‘Christians’ Aren’t Actually Saved.” These titles invite pushback. She publishes them anyway, week after week.

She has been open about money

Nothing erodes trust in a Christian creator faster than the sense that faith has become a business model. Sister Faith took that on directly in September with “A Biblical Perspective on Monetizing Christian Content.”

She walks through 2 Corinthians 2:17, 1 Timothy 6, and 1 Corinthians 9, where Paul defends the right of gospel workers to be supported and then explains why he chose not to use that right. She tells viewers she has turned down donations and many early opportunities, that she works full time, and that her weekly videos will stay free. Only after all that does she announce a paid membership for extra content such as Bible studies and live Q&As.

You can debate where she drew the line. But she drew it in public, with her reasoning on the table, before asking anyone for a dollar. Many Christian influencers never explain their incentives at all. This kind of openness is how a creator earns trust that lasts.

Why she is one to watch

Plenty of creators grow fast. Few grow fast with content this demanding. Here is why I expect her influence to keep rising:

Consistency. A long video every Thursday, plus Shorts, for months without a gap. The algorithm rewards that, and so do viewers.

A clear lane. She teaches discernment to a generation that picks up much of its theology from social media. She is speaking to the exact problem her viewers live inside.

Depth under the edge. The provocative titles bring people in, and the scripture-heavy teaching keeps them there. Her comment sections run hundreds or thousands deep, and she replies.

Short-form reach. Her Shorts regularly draw 30,000 to 100,000 views, and one has passed 220,000. Each one sends new viewers toward the long videos.

Restraint. She has turned down more offers than she has taken. That never shows up in a subscriber count, but it is what keeps a platform intact once it gets big.

A word of caution, in her own spirit

Fast growth brings pressure. A channel that names names will keep attracting critics, and it will be tempting to chase whatever drew the biggest reaction last week. Her monetization video already names the danger: money and influence bring new motives that have to be guarded. If she keeps the order she lays out in her gospel video, with God first and everything else after, her voice will outlast the season it rose in.

The apostle Paul described that posture simply: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16, NIV). When a viewer quoted that verse under her gospel video, she replied with just the reference, “Romans 1:16!” That reply is a fair summary of the whole channel.

She is new, she is growing fast, and she keeps pointing past herself. That is exactly why she is worth paying attention to.

Where to start watching

How I Share the Gospel in 3 Minutes

How to Discern Christian Content Online

Stop Turning Christianity Into an Aesthetic

Christian Artists I No Longer Listen To

New long-form videos post on Thursdays at youtube.com/@sisterfaithh. Channel figures are from public YouTube data as of September 29, 2026.

BEACH HAVEN, N.J., September 17, 2026 — Big-wave surfing pioneer Laird Hamilton will surf with and speak alongside blind New Jersey entrepreneur Sean Callagy at an exclusive event on Long Beach Island on Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at 7 a.m. at the Long Beach Island Historical Museum in Beach Haven.

Hamilton will take Callagy into the ocean off Beach Haven before the two join one another on stage at the museum, known locally as the Old Museum. Callagy — an attorney, father and co-founder of ACTi AI who has built his life and career while navigating blindness — will take on the water alongside one of the most influential figures in the sport.

Callagy is also co-founder of ACTi, an AI company whose specialized AI Beings, including 24/7 strategic partner Athena, help professionals navigate decisions, communication, business challenges and actionable next steps while keeping human judgment at the center.

The morning is designed to spotlight resilience, trust and human performance. Highlights include:

Hamilton and Callagy surfing together in the waters off Long Beach Island

An on-stage conversation at the Long Beach Island Historical Museum, 129 Engleside Ave., Beach Haven

Interview opportunities with both Hamilton and Callagy before and after the event

Hamilton is widely regarded as one of the most influential innovators in surfing, credited with helping pioneer tow-in surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and hydrofoil boarding. The event continues Callagy’s work through his Unblinded platform, which explores human potential and challenges conventional ideas about what is possible in business and in life.

Holmes will share how founders can turn media coverage into lasting visibility at a time when clarity matters more than volume.
